Philagro South Africa was established in 1998 when Sumitomo Chemical Company, Japan, expressed the wish to open an office in South Africa to support their product range. Thus, the company was established with Mr John Mansfield as the first managing director. Although Philagro was a new company, most of the products on offer were already very well-known in the agricultural market, such as Nemesis®, Meothrin®, Sumisclex®, Rizolex® and a few others.

In 2000, Sumitomo Chemical Company purchased the agricultural facilities of the pharmaceutical giant Abbott Laboratories, in the USA, and Valent Biosciences came into being. The products produced by Abbott, such as DiPel®, ProGibb® and Promalin® amongst others, as well as the local Abbott staff in South Africa joined Philagro.

With a sound commitment towards sustainable food production in agriculture, Philagro is excited to continuously expand on their biological portfolio. Mycorrhizal Applications that are based in the USA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Valent BioSciences and are considered a global leader in the development and manufacture of high-quality mycorrhizal products such as EndoMaxx®.

Philagro is also developing and distributing products from AlzChem in Germany, Aquamarine in the UK and Sumitomo Corporation from Japan.

Philagro has been involved in the distribution of protein supplementary poultry feed produced by Sumitomo Chemical Company since 2005, and as recently as 2019 we were asked to market the GAA from AlzChem in this market as well.

We believe in the continual research and development of new and existing products, as well as in the registration of new active ingredients. This is what will keep agriculture sustainable in Southern Africa.

In addition, we believe that our highly skilled technical field staff, who are backed by competent management, administration, and logistic departments, are the essence of obtaining success as an input provider in agriculture.
